2025 New Year's resolutions

“2025 New Year’s resolutions” - capitalisation of New and Year because it’s the name of a holiday, apostrophe after Year because the resolutions belong to New Year—not me. I guess that helps to remove any accountability for not achieving my resolutions since they’re not mine after all. Let’s change that. New title:

2025 - Tobias’ goals for the year

And let’s publish this. How about that for accountability, eh? The Internet will hold me to it!

I want to set out goals that would make me proud if I were to achieve them all fast foward a year.

Fitness:

  • Complete an inflatable 15K
  • Open water swimming:
    • Improve front crawl such that it becomes my natural, go-to stroke
    • Swim a mile (~1600m)
    • Reach temperatures of sub 10°C, and then some
  • 100 consecutive press-ups
  • Handstand without support for 10 seconds
  • Increase body weight to 185lbs and body fat <15%
  • Stretch at least twice a week
  • Climb a V5 (bouldering)

Health:

  • Improve my oral health, and get all zeros for gum health in my next appointment. Bryan Johnson would be proud
  • Strengthen my relationship with my partner and family, and express more how I love them very much

Home:

  • Curtains
  • Open shelving in the corner
  • Custom desk
  • Ceiling lights
  • Boiler maintenance

Finance:

  • Set up savings account and savings plans

Technology:

  • Deliver a public talk
  • As a freelance developer, build a website for someone
  • Publish my .config
  • Deepen Neovim understanding and release my own plugin
  • Expand the website to showcase the mini apps I’ve built
  • Things to try (tried = built some novel app):
    • Zig
    • Elm
    • Go
    • Clojure/ClojureScript
  • IoT - build my own remote control vehicle, and then automate it to a maze-running bot

Lifestyle:

  • Visit another country
  • Read… 10 books - boom. Time to get consistent
  • Learn to use a fancy coffee machine
  • Cook Spanish food at home: paella, patatas bravas, the works.
  • Practice the piano and play Fairytale of New York next Christmas

What I think I want may not be what I truly want. Maybe I’m setting the ideals for what I think the better version of me is, but what do I know? I’m just Toby 1.0. Time will tell; I at least owe it to myself to try my best to work on the goals I’ve laid out, and if they’re wrong, then pivot - very agile (lowercase ‘a’) of me, I know.
